Your resume and LinkedIn profile should work together. Most employers check both. If your LinkedIn profile is empty or outdated, you may lose opportunities. The good news is that you can build a strong LinkedIn profile just by using the information already in your resume.
Here is how to do it.
Do not leave your headline as “Student” or “Unemployed.” Use a clear title that matches your resume.
Examples:
A strong headline helps recruiters find you.
If your resume has a short summary, paste it into the “About” section. Keep it simple and direct.
Example:
Motivated Electrical Techniques student with hands-on shop experience, strong math skills, and a commitment to safety. Looking for an entry-level opportunity to learn, work hard, and grow.
Use the same job titles and dates as your resume. On LinkedIn, you can add a little more detail:
Keep your wording short and easy to read.
List your school, program, and expected graduation date. Add any tickets or training you have:
These help you get found in searches.
Copy key skills from your resume into the LinkedIn skills list.
Examples:
The more skills you add, the easier it is for employers to find you.
Use a clean, friendly photo with a plain background. You do not need a suit. A clean shirt and good lighting are enough. Profiles with photos get more views and more interview requests.
Ask a teacher, supervisor, or co-worker for a short recommendation. Even two or three lines can help.
You do not need to post every day. Just keep your profile updated when:
Your resume gets you noticed. Your LinkedIn profile proves you are real, active, and ready to work. When both match, you look organized and professional. Take 30 minutes to copy your resume information into LinkedIn and give employers one more reason to contact you.
