At Yotru we review thousands of resumes, from internships to CEO applications. A few stand out. Most do not. The good ones share the same clear traits. Nail these and your resume will get a second look.
First impressions matter . A resume that looks like it belongs for the job shows you respect the recruiter’s time. Keep length appropriate (one page for junior roles, one to two pages for experienced candidates), use a clean layout and consistent fonts, and avoid clutter. Recruiters skim fast, so make it easy for them to spot your job title, dates, and at least one clear win within ten seconds. Use simple headings, place the job title and company on one line with dates aligned to the right, use readable font sizes, and avoid tiny text, complicated columns, or dense blocks of copy.
Having the right skills on your resume matters. Match the language of the job posting. Pull keywords from the description and use them naturally in your bullets and skills section. Do not stuff keywords. Show the skills you actually used and put the most important ones in prominent places.
Short bullets that show action and result win every time. Try the formula action, context, result. Add numbers when you can. For example, say "Led a six person project that cut costs by 12%" instead of "responsible for projects." Numbers and specifics turn vague statements into proof. If the role is niche or regulated, make relevant industry experience obvious near the top. If you do not have direct experience, highlight similar contexts and transferable results so recruiters can see how you will do the job.
Degrees, licenses, and certificates still act as screening tools for many roles. If a qualification matters for the job, list it clearly and early, and include completion dates. Only add coursework or honors when they strengthen your story for the role you want.
Recruiters read a resume for career story as much as skills. Promotions and growing responsibility show forward motion. If your path looks jumpy, label contract roles or company reorganizations so reviewers understand the pattern. Clear career flow makes it easier to evaluate your potential.
