What Are RABI Codes, and Does Your Business Postcard Need Them?

RABI codes are postal markers that help sorting equipment find the address on a busy mail piece. They're not required for every postcard. Here's what they do, how they differ from QR codes, and why Canada Post suggested them for our design.

RABI Code importance for a Canada Post label

Your postcard has an offer, a clear message and a business contact you want to reach. But the design also needs to make the destination address easy for postal sorting equipment to find. That's where RABI codes can help.

The short answer: RABI codes are markers printed around the address block so sorting machines can locate it. Most postcards don't need them. They're worth considering when your design is graphics-heavy, and Canada Post can tell you whether your layout would benefit.

What do RABI codes do?

RABI codes are postal marker barcodes that help sorting equipment locate the destination address block. Canada Post's Smartmail Marketing guide says they may be used or recommended for mail pieces with lots of graphics. They aren't a blanket requirement for every postcard.

Think of them as signposts around the mailing address. Your offer gets the reader's attention; the markers help the sorting equipment find the information it needs.

Why Canada Post recommended them for our design

When we submitted a postcard design to Canada Post for review, their team suggested adding RABI codes to help their sorting machines locate the address. The recommendation was optional and specific to our layout.

Their advice was practical: keep the markers close to the address block, while leaving enough space for the longest address in the mailing.

That matters when you're sending to businesses. One label might contain only a company name and street address. Another might include a named contact, department, company and unit number. The layout needs to fit both. Our guide to addressing a B2B postcard in Canada shows what a full business label looks like.

Does your postcard need RABI codes?

Ask yourself how easy the address is to find at a glance:

  • Worth considering: the address sits close to photos, colour blocks, a QR code or other graphics, or your design looks busy around the label area.
  • Probably not needed: the address has its own clear, plain area with nothing printed around it.
  • Not sure: send a sample to Canada Post. A review before printing costs far less than a reprint.

Are RABI codes the same as QR codes?

No. They serve different purposes:

RABI codesQR codes
Who reads itPostal sorting equipmentThe recipient's phone
What it doesHelps locate the address blockOpens your website or campaign page
What it tells youNothing; it's for the post officeWhich card was scanned, and when
Required? No; recommended for some designsNo; but it's how you measure response

A RABI code doesn't validate the address or provide delivery tracking. And a QR scan records an interaction, rather than proving every postcard in a campaign was delivered. More on how QR codes work on direct mail.

The address deserves as much attention as the offer

A readable label still needs an accurate address. A well-designed postcard can still come back if a business has moved or a unit number is missing.

Before printing, check the contact details, the address formatting and how the longest labels fit into the design. After mailing, use returned pieces to find records that need attention. These details are part of running a campaign you can learn from and improve.

Why we handle these details at Yotru

At Yotru, we double-check addresses before mailing, track postcard QR scans and log returned mail to help keep our lists up to date. Each step answers a different question:

  • Is the address ready to mail?
  • Did someone engage?
  • Did a piece come back?

That gives you more useful information for your next campaign, alongside the design, printing and mailing.

Frequently asked questions

What are RABI codes?

Postal marker barcodes printed around the destination address block. They help Canada Post's sorting equipment find the address on mail pieces with a lot of graphics.

Are RABI codes required by Canada Post?

Not for every postcard. Canada Post may use or recommend them for graphics-heavy designs. In our case the recommendation was optional and specific to our layout.

Where do RABI codes go on a postcard?

Around the address block, as close to the address as possible while leaving room for the longest address in your mailing. Get the exact specifications from Canada Post.

What's the difference between RABI codes and QR codes?

RABI codes help postal equipment find the address. QR codes are for the recipient: they open your campaign page and let you measure who scanned.

Do RABI codes confirm that my postcard was delivered?

No. They don't validate the address or provide delivery tracking. They only help sorting equipment read the address that's printed.

How do I get RABI codes for my mailing?

Ask Canada Post for the specifications and files, add them to your design, and have a sample reviewed before you print.

Why do some business postcards come back undelivered?

Usually because the business has moved, the unit number is missing, or the address is incomplete. Log every returned piece and fix the record before your next mailing.
