It's easy to treat personalization as one thing: swap in a name, call it personalized, move on. In practice it's doing two separate jobs that both matter. The first is recognition: does this look like it was actually made for me, or is it one more generic mailer with my address printed on it. The second is relevance: now that I'm looking, is there an actual reason for me to care. A piece can nail recognition and still fail if the message underneath is generic. It can also have a genuinely strong message that never gets read because nothing about the piece earned that first look.
What actually creates recognition
At the recognition level, the most useful things are also the simplest: the recipient's name, their company's name, their logo, and an image that's recognizably theirs rather than stock photography. None of that is complicated to generate at scale, that's what variable-data printing is for, but it's easy to underrate how much it matters. A postcard addressed to "the business owner at this address" reads as mail. A postcard with your own company's name and logo on it reads as something someone actually looked at your business before sending.

Personal details that weren't obviously public, or that make someone wonder how you got that, tend to undercut trust rather than build it. The test isn't whether the data is technically available. It's whether using it makes the message more relevant or just proves that someone was watching.
Does this only work for B2B?
No. The same recognition-then-relevance mechanics apply to high-value B2C campaigns, home renovation, roofing, real estate, wealth management, anywhere the purchase is substantial enough to justify a personalized physical piece. What changes between B2B and high-value B2C is where the recognition comes from and the targeting logic, not the underlying attention mechanism. A business owner recognizes their own storefront in a photo. A homeowner is more likely to respond to something familiar about their street or neighborhood than to a photo of their own house, which can tip into feeling surveilled rather than recognized.
