The Reality of Gen Z Resumes
6/16/2025
Team Yotru
The job market today isn’t what it used to be. Between remote work, AI tools, side hustles, and short-term gigs, Gen Z is entering a completely different landscape. So it makes sense that your resume should look different too.
If you're wondering what your resume should look like in 2025, here’s what matters — and how to make it stand out.
1. Keep It Simple and Easy to Scan
One page is enough. Forget long blocks of text and crammed bullet points. You want something clean and clear, not overwhelming.
What helps:
- A modern layout with breathing room
- Simple fonts like Arial or Calibri
- Clear sections: Summary, Skills, Experience, Education
- White space so people can actually read it
Think of it less like a biography and more like a highlight reel.
2. Show What You Can Do, Not Just Where You Worked
A lot of early-career folks don’t have long job histories — and that’s okay. What you’ve done or built matters more than job titles.
Highlight things like:
- Real skills, both soft and technical
- Courses or certificates from Google, Coursera, or wherever you’ve learned
- Personal or school projects, side hustles, freelance gigs
Launched a small Etsy store? Built a bot? Helped someone run their socials? All of that counts.
3. Make Sure It Can Be Read by a Bot
Most resumes get scanned by software (called ATS) before a human ever sees them. If it’s not formatted right, it might never reach a real person.
Play it safe:
- Use standard section titles
- Avoid tables, text boxes, and graphics
- Include keywords from the job description
- Save it as a PDF
Tools like Yotru help with all of this so you don’t have to stress about formatting.
4. Add Some Personality (Just Not Too Much)
You can absolutely sound like a real person. Just keep it relevant.
What’s worth including:
- A short summary that explains who you are
- Links to your portfolio, GitHub, LinkedIn, or even YouTube
- Side projects or interests that show creativity or leadership
You don’t need emojis or a selfie unless you’re applying for something super creative.
5. Use Tools That Actually Make Sense for You
Gen Z job hunting is fast and mostly online. You need tools that are made for that.
That’s why we built Yotru:
- It’s designed for students and early-career folks
- It helps you say things better, faster
- It makes sure your resume works for both recruiters and bots
